Wellness, well-being, work-life balance—we’re bombarded with so many buzzwords and so much terminology that it’s difficult to remember what they really mean. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell whether a boss is creating a recipe for healthy work culture, or merely dipping a ladle into the word-soup.
What is well-being?
Well-being is having a healthy physical, mental, and emotional state that results from the ways in which we conduct our lives at home, at work, and in the things we do.
Gallup defines well-being as “encompassing the broader holistic dimensions of a well-lived life.” Their research found five elements of well-being that add up to a thriving life:
Career well-being: You like what you do every day.
Social well-being: You have meaningful friendships in your life.
Financial well-being: You manage your money well.
Physical well-being: You have the energy to get things done.
Community well-being: You like where you live.
Of course, well-being can mean something different to everyone. At Field Effect, we’re working to understand the needs of our teams in the face of shifting workplace realities. We want to prioritize employees and their health, which is why we’re doing something different.
For the past three years, we've spent the month of April hosting a company-wide Wellness Challenge designed to reward our roster of awesome humans for taking care of themselves.
How our Wellness Challenge works
Forming into teams of six, Field Effect employees nominate a captain and pick a team name (we've seen some amazing names like The Tragically Fit and the Red Hot Chili Steppers). Then, teams track their collective wellness activities to earn points.
Every Thursday, team captains email their points totals to the organizer. The team with the most points at the end of the month wins a cash prize that goes to a charity of their choosing.
To add a little fire to the competition, our Wellness Challenge host highlights the leading team in the company social every Friday.
Wellness activities can be physical exercise including walking, biking, swimming, yoga, or any kind of activity that gets you moving. But we know that wellness is so much more than physical fitness, so teams also earn points when they:
Get a full night's sleep
Eat lunch away from their desk
Enjoy a mindfulness activity
Carry out a random act of kindness
Wellness can be practiced with anyone—in fact, we encourage it—so some Field Effect employees bring along their kids, cousins, siblings, friends, and fur babies! Teams also get bonus points for posting pictures on the company chat with the hashtag #fieldeffectlife, so everyone can join in on the fun.
